Expectation is such a loaded word. We expect so much from ourselves, each other, and God. Yet, the season of Advent is one of expectation. Creating and using an Advent wreath in our homes during this often hectic season can help focus our expectation on the comings of Christ — into human history in Bethlehem, at the end of time, and into our hearts each day.
Try creating a simple wreath with fresh greens and four candles of any size. Usually there are three violet-colored candles and one pink one, but feel free to be creative. Each candle represents one week of Advent, with the pink candle representing the third week, or halfway point. Choose a convenient and meaningful time each day to light the candles and be mindful of where you’ve encountered Christ that day. If possible, share this ritual with others in your home, or invite a friend to join you weekly to share this beautiful Advent tradition.
