Yes, we want this to be a better year,
but we don’t discount all the graces of years past.
Yes, we believe it’s possible to be transformed,
but we know transformation doesn’t happen immediately and all at once.
Yes, we think that planning is a helpful and healthy thing to do,
but we know God doesn’t operate according to our schedules.
Yes, we value history because it makes us who we are,
but we’re not limited to our past.
Yes, we believe God is love,
but we haven’t completely defined what love looks like on any given day.
Yes, we’re big fans of hopes and dreams,
but we won’t waste today’s energy worrying about days that haven’t happened yet.
Yes, we have a lot to learn,
but we will never forget that we are already quite wise.
May the year 2012 find us utterly flexible and teachable! May we expect God to accomplish astounding acts of love and wonder in our days and hours—and may we consent to being part of that continuing story.
The January theme for Days of Deepening Friendship is interior freedom. We can open our hearts and participate in divine life only if we are free to do so. Begin meditating on what it means to be free, truly. More on that Wednesday!
