The theme for Week #2 of this Lenten retreat, based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, is: Finding God in all things.
Here’s a song that, I believe, is about that very thing. Carrie Newcomer is a Quaker singer/songwriter who tours all over the world and is involved in works for peace and justice. I met her several years ago at a writers’ conference, where I first heard her sing this song; it immediately became one of my Top 20 songs of all time. Notice that each verse explores one of the physical senses: sight, taste, sound, and touch. And two of my favorite lines, right at the end:
“If holy is a sphere that cannot be rendered,
There is no middle place because all of it is center.”
