Friday’s Reflection: Explore Your Passion

by Vinita Hampton Wright on 08/24/2012

When we understand that passion goes much deeper than momentary emotion or sexual attraction, then we can begin to explore where passion finds its home in us.

In this week’s reflection, I offer a few questions that might help.

In 4 months I will be 90 years old and my passion is dead. What hope is there for ones like me?

Hi Mary and happy birthday for four months from now. Ninety gives you a podium; you get to show us how it’s done!

I’ve found that motivation follows action, not the other way around. If you just do a thing eventually you will become involved in it and the old feelings will come back. Sometimes deadness is a desolation type feeling that it’s time to move to something different, some new endeavour. Also, being as active as you are able to, keeps those feel good hormones moving.

Let us know what you did!

Congratulations on a long life! To be 90 means that you’ve survived a lot, worked a lot, loved a lot–and that you’ve certainly had some passion in your life, the fuel to keep it all going.

After a certain age–for some people it’s 90, and for others it comes much earlier–we have to acknowledge that our level of activity has changed and will never be what it once was. However, passion does not always mean activity. Sometimes passion is lived out through a contemplative life, through prayer, silence and solitude. Sometimes passion is expressed through a loving welcome and generosity toward others. You can be passionate while listening, while observing what is happening in the world around you. You can express passion through paying attention and practicing gratitude for everything, small or large, that blesses your life. And sometimes we are blessed with the ability–even when we have grown quite old–to be creative through writing or painting or some other craft.

Blessings upon you, Mary! I don’t believe that your passion is dead; it may simply be resting, or it’s become more quiet and subtle. Peace–Vinita
