Music, Dance, and Prayer in the Sufi Tradition

Something a bit different today. This eight-minute video shows Sufi women dancing. Sufism is the mystical branch of Islam, and it weds prayer with music, chanting, and movement. I love to watch these dancers/pray-ers, because it is clear that movement, thought, emotion, and prayer are all one action, one experience. I enjoy seeing the dancers lost in their prayer.

Just too dizzying to watch…I appreciate dance after years of modern dance, ballet, tap, & acrobatics…but twirling for this length of time?… literally can’t watch.

Vinita, even though I have occasional bouts of vertigo, I would LOVE to dance with them. Bless you for these moments of sacred, spellbinding worship that slowed me down as they twirled. Almost hypnotic and definitely a holy meditation. Thanks so much for giving me the chance to watch women who pray with their entire bodies with such grace.
